Countrywide PV hosting capacity and energy storage requirements for distribution networks: The case of Switzerland

Distributed photovoltaic (PV) generation is typically connected to power distribution grids, which are not designed host a large amount of production if it significantly larger than their nominal electricity demand. Given the prominent role PV in energy transition pathways, modeling existing infrastructure’s constraints and limitations key for its reliable techno-economical analysis expansion. As countrywide models grids are, general, available, this paper first tackles problem estimating medium voltage (MV) starting from publicly available datasets. It then proposes method estimate hosting capacity such extend through storage systems. final contribution ultimate objective, derive cost-optimal plans deployment systems considering MV technical limitations. The distributed potential modeled with high-spatially resolved factors. Results discussed using Switzerland as case study.
